On top of this area, which in jargon is called rolling stock realization, Hitachi Rail also includes a specific line of business that focuses on the development and implementation of signaling systems and digital technology, tools used in the construction and management of railway infrastructure.

These two areas, combined with another key component, which is Service & Maintenance, help make Hitachi Rail a company capable of providing turn-key solutions.

The company's mission is to contribute to society through the sustainable development of innovative and superior technologies and products.

For this particular reason, among the various initiatives that characterize Hitachi Rail, it was decided in the Pistoia plant to invest in the introduction of the EasYard system, a tool that impacts the organization across the board by acting on 3 main pillars:

  • Sustainability and Occupational Safety
  • Safety in the sense of security
  • Productivity

We decided to invest in the introduction of the EasYard system because it is a tool that impacts our organization across the board by acting on 3 main pillars:
  • Sustainability and Occupational Safety
  • Security
  • Productivity
It is therefore largely in line with what our values and mission are.

DEMANDS

Hitahi Rail embarked in 2012 on a path of growth through new technologies and digital transformation with the aim of competing and establishing itself as a leader in a global scenario. The goal of the Smart Factory (Digital Transformation) office is to solve in the practical those problems that can generate inefficiencies or that allow us to offer a competitive advantage in terms of operational time reduction, decision support, cost optimization.

Specifically, in the Pistoia plant we needed to:

  • improve safety (the motto is Safety first) by finding a system that could handle peak access:
    - driver/transport company/supplier recognition (data received through booking);
    - tracking of materials entering the company;
    - ability to know in advance the traffic of vehicles and people accessing at our Plant;
  • improve environmental sustainability with reduced CO2 emissions and corporate compliance;
    - tracking workshop vehicles and related equipment;
    - direct connection with logistics for verification of materials entering the plant.

SOLUTIONS

In response to the needs, EasYard has been configured in order to:

  • avoid truck entrances at "peak" times when the staff enters too, limiting the time arcs available to drivers during booking;
  • manage all the traffic data of the vehicles entering the plant in a systematic way, allowing to have very reliable estimations on what represents the impact of transport in terms of CO2; moreover, the system allows to intercept in advance the license plates of the vehicles that have to enter the plant and refuse in advance the entry of the vehicles that are not compliant with the procedures: only euro 5 and euro 6 vehicles enter;
  • have a preview of the bills of materials and equipment that will enter the plant;
  • send any maps of the plant to drivers signaling the safest routes and any traffic disruptions due to work in progress.

The adoption of a digital solution for the yard management process has made it possible to support the other stakeholders involved on the issue. From reducing waiting times and queues outside the plant, to normalizing the workload for logistics, with direct impact on workplace safety, to the ability to monitor a number of sustainability-oriented indicators. In addition, with an integrated solution, EasYard allows us to manage operations with our suppliers/transporters and at the same time track and monitor a record that can be useful for decision-making processes.
